Oxidising Kit for Sterling Silver

Safety
Work in a well-ventilated area, preferably near an open window. Avoid inhaling the fumes and avoid contact with skin and eyes. Keep out of reach of children.
Remove all other jewelry before starting, as the vapors from the oxidizing solution may also oxidize nearby silver jewelry.
Cover your work surface, as the solution may stain.

1. Clean the jewelry
Wash the ring with warm water and a small amount of dish soap to remove skin oils, lotion residue, and dirt. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely. A clean surface helps the oxidation develop evenly.

2. Heat the water
Heat a small amount of water to approximately 80°C / 176°F.

3. Prepare the oxidizing solution
Use a small container, approximately 50 ml, and add 1 piece of liver of sulfur. Pour the hot water over it.

4. Oxidize the jewelry
Place the ring into the solution and gently move it around with a toothpick. Leave it in the solution for a few minutes, until the desired darkness is achieved.

5. Rinse and dry
Remove the ring from the solution using a toothpick and allow it to cool slightly. Rinse thoroughly under clean water and dry with a soft cloth.

6. Optional: Create the “Oxidized Polished” finish
If you would like a dark finish with brighter raised areas, very gently rub the higher parts of the ring with fine sandpaper. Work gradually until you achieve the desired look.

7. Protect the finish
Apply a small amount of Renaissance Wax with a soft cloth and rub it evenly over the ring. The wax helps protect the oxidized surface and gives the dark color a deeper appearance.

8. Repeat when needed
The oxidation process can be repeated later to refresh the finish. Avoid sanding too often or too heavily, as the raised details of the ring may gradually wear down and the pattern may become less visible.
